Corey, The Little Green Thing

An Essay on Chlorophyll

I am called Corey, the chlorophyll.  Some people call me the little green thing you find in a plant cell.   I wonder sometimes if I’m related to aliens because people call aliens the little green men.  But for a little green thing, I’m more important than a little green man because I help the plant convert sunlight to energy they can use in their metabolism.  Think of me as some sort of food processor.  I help the process, so they can have food.  Compare that to some green people that walk around on Mars, that can only say bleep-blap-bloop all the time.

Sometimes, I also think of why plants need us and humans don’t.  But that’s because people depend on the food (plants and animals) they eat to get their energy.  They don’t need little green things like me floating and swimming around in their blood.  Can you imagine humans with green blood who don’t have any green parts on them?  Well, I can name a few, like the Incredible Hulk, Shrek, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the Jolly Green Giant, but that’s another story.  And remember, that is why I am such an important little green thing.

Another Miss Fickle Pickle Story ...

My Luckiest Day Ever

I’m Lucky the Leprechaun, and in case you’ve forgotten, it’s soon to be St. Patrick’s Day.  My little sister clover is helping up put a rabbit foot in front of our hut.  I told my dad many times before to just buy one at the dollar tree but he insists to catch the rabbit and cut it’s leg off fresh.

Instead, I was a wii little folk.  I played wii all day!  Except today I could not be, we were so busy.  I kept chasing that rabbit with a knife until I was exhausted.  Then, out of the gloomy day, that joy came over me like when you’re watching a green sock commercial.  A magnificent rainbow shadowed me and I thought a big pot of gold was waiting for me, but no.  An awkward horse with a horn on its head stood there looking at me.  That’s when I shrieked like a girl does when she sees a really cute dress at Justice.  Then, clover came along asking what happened.  She was holding a sack of Lucky Charms and I just HAD to have one.  “I’ll .. uh, give you a pot of gold for that sack of Lucky Charms, “ the words blurted out so fast I didn’t know what I was thinking.  I was NOT going to the end of that rainbow.

Before I could explain, Clover immediately shouted Yes and dragged me to the unicorn.  Great, I thought, just what I need and I hurried to Clover.  “This is great Lucky!”  Clover laughed riding the unicorn.  “Where did the unicorn come from?” I asked.  “Probably fell out of the sky,” Clover giggled crazily, “so where’s the rabbit?”  I shook my head.

I really wanted those Lucky charms so I took a big breath and this is what I said, “I will trade you.”  Clover’s eyes popped out, “okay!”  I couldn’t imagine riding a horse to the end of the rainbow on a quest to find gold, but that’s what we just did.

“Glitters, come on girl!” Clover called.  I rolled my eyes.  Was this really worth a cinched sack of lucky charms?  I guess so.  That’s when a rustle in the bush was heard, I thought it was the rabbit so I grabbed my knife.  Two things happened.  I was thankful I grabbed my knife because a minotaur came out of nowhere!  Clover shrieked and ran behind the unicorn.  I didn’t know what to do, so I held up the unicorn saying, “take this as a sacrifice”.  Of course, he didn’t budge.  I wasn’t going to be a coward, so I put up my knife for a fight.  After twisting and punching a bit, I jabbed my knife in and yanked out his big, fat, rusty horn.  The minotaur fell on the ground and Clover ran to hug me. “ That costs a few more lucky charms”, I giggled.

After that I swore to St. Patrick that I wouldn’t sacrifice the unicorn.  That’s when a strange thing little goblin popped out.  “You say MY NAME?”  “What, Patrick?”  I asked.  “No, Rick, Dick, Pick and Kick!” the goblin cackled.  Three more goblins came out.  “I am Rick.  He is Dick.  This is Pick.  And she is my daughter, Kick.  We call her Kick because she kicks a lot”, Rick replied.  Then, Pick kicked me hard and grinned, “It’s a coin a body to cross this bridge.  That’s three coins for all of you to cross the goblin’s ick bridge,” Dick laughed.  Then they all reached out their hands. “What, you want high-fives?” I asked.  “No” Kick muttered under her breath.  “We want the money, “ she snarled.  “Okay, uh Lucky!  Do you have any coins?” Clover asked.   I reached into my vest and pulled out one coin.  I handed it to Pick. “Clover can now cross,” I said sternly.  I reached in knowing I had another coin there but it was gone.  I turned my head to Clover but she didn’t cross the bridge!  The dumb unicorn did.  “Clover!”  I screamed.  Clover   Then, clover pulled a silver flute out of her hat and played a sweet melody.  Suddenly, a phoenix soared down and cawed!  Clover smiled.  “lucky, meet my St. Patrick’s Day present from last year.  I call her Beauty.”  Clover replied proudly.   Amazed, I hopped on to the bird.  When we hopped off, I complimented Beauty.  What a splendid bird, I said.  Clover kissed her bird on the beak and handed Beauty a crabapple.  We were officially three-fourths on the way there when…  “A rabbit!”  Clover’s boisterous voice screamed.  She hastily grabbed my knife and chased it around.  “Come back here you nincompoop!”  I shouted abruptly following her!  We were going west!  We needed to go north!

Suddenly, a big throng of women carrying pies scurried around.  The Annual Pie Convention was massive as ever this year!  Then I saw a green hat!  “Clover! “ I yelled tugging her shirt.  “I got the foot!”  she said holding it up for me to see.  Then, she stuffed it in a brown sack. “If you want that pot of gold, you need to stay on the trail!”  I demanded.  I didn’t know if she was listening or not because she was gobbling down a cherry pie an dchugging a carton of icy cold chocolate milk.  I dragged her by the arm back to where we were.  There wasn’t much time left and Mom wanted her “wee little children” home in their sweet Ireland hut.  That’s when clover gasped. “Lucky!  Look!” she cried.  Her finger was pointing to the rainbow that was fading away.  “Run,”  I screamed.  That’s when Glitters has to come with us, “clover wept with her puppy dog face.  “Well hurry!”  I jumped on to the horse and clover yelled. “Hurry Glitters! Please!”  clover hugged Glitters’ neck.  Glitters’ hooves carried down the path until a shiny pot of gold was found.

“Yes!” Clover cried.  “Now give me the sack”  I said pointing to the one tied on her side.  “But Lucky, that’s …”  I could tell she wasn’t giving it so I stopped her.  “Now!”  I screamed.  Clover shrugged her shoulders and gave me the bag.  Though, when I reached inside … I pulled out a rabbit foot!  “I tried to tell you Lucky!  That’s the rabbit foot.” Clover complained.  “Why does it say Lucky Charms on it though?”  I asked.  I was so bummed but curious at the same time.   “Mom couldn’t find a sack so she poured out all the Lucky Charms and handed me the sack,” Clover laughed.  I laughed too.  “Wait!  How are we getting back?”  I asked.  Clover blew her whistle and Beauty soared through the skies.  After heaving the pot onto Beauty’s back, we left.  That was the best day of my life and I would not forget it.  After that day,  I learned many morals.  Especially not to bet.  Now, I , Lucky Shamrock Leprechaun have to go.   I enjoyed chatting and this comes to …

The End.

The Middle Man in ... The Science Fair

The Middle Man in. . . .

The Science Fair

Once there was a boy name Mike Middle. He was always in the middle. He was in the middle of his family; he sat in the middle of the classroom, he even was in the middle of his life. His best friends were Aaron Archer, who was twelve and Zeke Zany who was ten. Mike was eleven.

One day, Mike Middle was in the middle of a situation. He was trying to be first in the science fair. There were ten winners and the first winner wins a trip to Florida! So he went to work. He jotted down his ideas: Baking soda volcano, how gravity works, static electricity, how many old people have nice cars, and how long does it take for a dog to bark. He called Zeke and Aaron and asked if they could help.

Once Aaron and Zeke arrived, Mike told them his ideas. “I like static electricity,” stated Zeke. “I want the old people and nice cars idea,” replied Aaron. “Aw, I wanted to do the baking soda volcano,” groaned Mike. “I have an idea!” exclaimed Zeke. “We can do all of the projects on our own and then meet on Friday and see who’s turned out best,” said Zeke. “Works for me,” replied Aaron. “Okay!” agreed Mike. The boys started research right away by reading.

At Mike’s House on Thursday morning. . . .
Mike wanted his volcano to have red lava, so first, he asked his mother for food coloring. Then, he watched a video online. Once he printed out instructions, and tried the experiment himself, all he had to do was paint the volcano. He walked to Penny’s paints and bought some nice vibrant colors for the volcano. His sister and brother helped. Finally, he painted the masterpiece and voila! It was the best baking soda volcano in the universe!

At Aaron’s house on Thursday afternoon. . .
First, Aaron walked across the street to the “Staying Sweet” Retirement home. He asked all the old ladies and gentlemen to go to the parking lot and stand by their car. Then, he tallied all who had fancy cars, and all who had satisfied cars in an okay shape. Then, he went to the Dollar Store and bought a poster board and some markers. Next, he pasted down pictures and data about his experiment. With mom’s approval and a few tweaks, it was finally finished.

At Zeke’s house on Friday morning. . .
First, Zeke wanted to make the world of static electricity pop. He bought many balloons and socks and conducted many experiments. Next, he made a presentation on his mom’s laptop. After more research and a few comments from his Uncle Billy, he was finished. He wore his manly pink t-shirt and headed for Mike’s house.

On Friday, they all met at Mike’s house. Aaron went first. He pulled out his poster board to find. . . His little sister Anna drew all over it! Lollipops covered the total amount of tallies and a big princess covered up a picture of a granny in a hot rod. “Anna!” screamed Aaron angrily.

Then, Mike went. He started to put in baking soda. Then, he poured in the vinegar to find. . . It wasn’t a bottle of vinegar, but his mother’s conditioner bottle. Now his volcano was a dripping, conditioned, mess. “Mom!” yelled Mike angrily.
Then, Zeke went. He handed his friends each a balloon and told them to blow them up. Aaron and Mike tried to blow up the balloons for fifteen minutes, only to find . . . his older brother Luke had poked holes in them! And the presentation was erased. “Luke!” yelled Zeke angrily. “None of this stuff works,” mumbled Mike sadly. “So I visited old people for nothing!?” asked Aaron. “So I wasted fifteen dollars on balloons for nothing?!” asked Zeke.

“I got it!” exclaimed Mike. “We could conduct an experiment about how I’m always in the middle!” suggested Mike. “I love it,” commented Zeke. “Let’s get cracking,” screamed Aaron. That night, the boys worked very hard on the project. They hid it under Mike’s bed for protection too. They had to work hard if they wanted to finish it by two days.

The next day, Mike brought the things to the fair and Aaron and Zeke met him there, all dressed up nicely. By the time the judges came to Mike’s presentation, they were sick and tired of science projects. They flopped on the chairs and watched Mike and his friends. “Go on,” yawned the judges. “For some reason, I’m always in the middle,” started Mike. “I’m always first” said Aaron. “And I’m last,” complained Zeke. As they went on, the judges became more concerned. At the end, the judges had enough. “Mike Middle! I cannot believe what you did! That was unexplainable!” scolded the first judge. “I can’t imagine you!” yelled the other with a very mean look. Mike frowned, “I’m so sorry.”

“Sorry!? Sorry!? Ben, the boy thinks we’re yelling at him,” laughed the first judge. “We aren’t scolding you, we’re praising you! You are first place!” And they celebrated in Florida the next day.

The End.
